May, June and September are the strongest months.

The short version

Late May to mid-June and the whole of September are the two strongest windows. You get warm water, full boat schedules, manageable crowds and the lake still holding its spring level. July and August work but demand early starts. Winter is for birders and nobody else.

Spring: March to May

High water, green hills, and the best birding of the year. Pelicans are on the platforms through March and April; migration peaks in April. Air temperatures climb from 15 °C to 24 °C, water is too cold for most swimmers until late May. Boats run but on reduced schedules — check ahead in March.

Early summer: June

The single best month if you want the postcard. Water lilies carpet the channels through June, the lake is still high, temperatures sit around 28 °C, and the crowds have not yet arrived in force. Book boats a day ahead and you will have a straightforward, beautiful trip.

High summer: July and August

Hot — 33–36 °C is normal — and busy, with coach traffic from Budva and Kotor arriving between 11:00 and 15:00. Water levels drop, some channels close, and lily coverage thins. None of this ruins the lake; it just means you take the 09:00 boat, swim in the south, and eat late. Parking in Virpazar becomes the real problem, which is why reserved parking for boat tour guests is worth arranging before you drive in.

Autumn: September and October

September is the connoisseur's month: 26–29 °C air, 24 °C water, empty boats, return bird migration and the Crmnica grape harvest. October cools quickly and the light turns extraordinary, though schedules thin out after the middle of the month.

Winter: November to February

Rain — this is one of the wettest corners of Europe — and rising water. Most tourist infrastructure closes. What remains is the bleak fishery, huge flocks of wintering waterfowl and a lake that belongs entirely to the villages. Rewarding if you know what you came for.
