Yes. It is the largest lake in the Balkans, a national park, one of Europe's best birding wetlands and under an hour from most of the Montenegrin coast. Half a day shows you why; a full day with an overnight is materially better.

Late May to mid-June for water lilies and green landscape, or September for warm water and thin crowds. July and August work if you take the 09:00 boat.

No. The Bar–Podgorica train stops at Virpazar four to six times a day, ten minutes' walk from the jetty, for €2–3.

One to seven hours. Three hours is the most common booking from Virpazar, four hours for wooden boats from Poseljani and five to seven for full-lake private routes.

€20–45 per person for group departures. Private boats are priced per boat: about €120–180 for a half day and €250–450 for a full day.

From four people upwards, almost always — the per-head cost matches a group tour while the route roughly doubles and you choose the departure time.

In July and August, yes for morning and sunset departures. Elsewhere in the season a day's notice usually suffices; private boats need 24–48 hours.

09:00 or the last departure before sunset. Midday tours are hot, busy and offer the flattest light of the day.

Yes, and it is excellent on the southern shore around Murici, where visibility reaches three to four metres and the water hits 26 °C in summer. The shallow northern end near Virpazar is silty.

No. Water snakes are present and harmless, and there is nothing that poses a risk to swimmers.

Between February and May there is a genuine chance of Dalmatian pelicans in the northern arms. Sightings are never guaranteed and boats must keep their distance from the colonies.

Only with national park permission. This is a protected bird sanctuary and rangers enforce the rule.

In July and August, yes — central spaces are gone by around 10:00 and late arrivals walk 600–800 metres. Arrive before 09:30 or arrange private parking through your boat operator.

Yes. Several family-run boats and konobas are cash-only and the village ATM frequently empties in high season.

A few euros per person per day, usually included in organised boat tour tickets. Keep the ticket — rangers do check.
