Fishing on Skadar Lake: Species, Permits and Local Method

What swims here

Around fifty fish species, of which four matter to visitors. Carp is the trophy fish and the one that ends up on restaurant grills. Bleak — ukljeva — is the lake's economic backbone, netted in winter and smoked or dried. Eel still runs, though numbers are far below historic levels. Perch and chub fill in the rest.

Permits and rules

Skadar Lake is a national park, so recreational fishing requires a permit from the park authority — a few euros per day, obtainable in Virpazar or Vranjina. Spring spawning closures apply, mesh sizes are regulated, and the eel fishery is restricted. Enforcement is real; rangers do check.

The simplest route for a visitor is to book a boat with a licensed local fisherman, who handles the paperwork as part of the trip.

Method and timing

• Carp: early morning and dusk, margins and lily edges, sweetcorn or boilies, spring and autumn best.
• Bleak: winter shoals in the deeper northern arms, traditionally netted rather than angled.
• Perch: small lures and spinners along drop-offs and around Grmožur.
• Eel: night fishing, worm or deadbait, permit restrictions apply.

Fishing with locals

The families in Virpazar, Poseljani and Karuč have fished this water for generations and their reading of the wind and level is better than any app. Many of the same boatmen who run tours will take anglers out at dawn if you ask directly — a slow wooden boat cruise from Poseljani is the same hull the fishermen use.
