Money and logistics
- Bring cash. Several family operators and konobas are cash-only and the village ATM runs dry in August.
- Montenegro uses the euro despite not being in the eurozone.
- Fuel up in Podgorica or Bar; there is no petrol station in the village.
- Mobile coverage is good in Virpazar, patchy on the southern shore, absent in some bays.
- The pharmacy has limited hours — bring what you need.
Timing
- 09:00 boat, always, in July and August.
- Arrive before 09:30 if you are driving — see our parking guide.
- Wind builds from the south after 13:00 most summer days.
- Restaurants are chaotic 13:00–15:00 and calm at 20:00.
- Shops close for a long lunch. Plan around it.
On the water
- There is no shade on a fast boat. Hat, sleeves, sunscreen.
- Take a dry bag; spray is real once the boat is up on the plane.
- Confirm whether park entry is included before paying.
- Ask the boatman to cut the engine at least once. Silence is the best thing out there.
- Tip in cash if the guide was good; it is not obligatory and it is remembered.
Comfort
- Mosquitoes appear at dusk from June onwards, especially near the reeds. Repellent, not optimism.
- The lake reflects light brutally — polarised sunglasses transform the day.
- Water shoes help on the pebble beaches at Murici.
- Nights are warm in summer but the boat is cold after sunset in September.
Etiquette
- Cover shoulders and knees at the monasteries.
- Ask before photographing fishermen or villagers.
- Accept the rakija. Refusing is the impolite option.
- Do not fly a drone without permission — this is a bird sanctuary.
- Take your rubbish out with you; collection here is minimal.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need cash in Virpazar?
Yes. Card acceptance is inconsistent among family-run boats and konobas, and the single village ATM often empties in high season.
Are there mosquitoes at Skadar Lake?
At dusk near the reed beds from June onwards, yes. Repellent handles it; midday and open water are fine.
Can I fly a drone over Skadar Lake?
Not without national park permission. It is a protected bird sanctuary and rangers enforce this.
