How to Get to Skadar Lake: Every Route Explained
Virpazar has a motorway exit and its own railway station. Here is every realistic way in, with times and costs.

By car — the default
The road is good the whole way; the only real friction is arrival. Virpazar is a village of a few hundred people absorbing hundreds of cars a day in August — read our parking guide before you set off.
- Podgorica → Virpazar: 30 km, about 30 minutes.
- Bar → Virpazar: 27 km, about 30 minutes via the Sozina tunnel (toll ~€3.50).
- Budva → Virpazar: 50 km, about 50 minutes.
- Kotor → Virpazar: 70 km, about 1 h 15 min.
- Tivat airport → Virpazar: 65 km, about 1 h 10 min.
- Podgorica airport → Virpazar: 25 km, about 25 minutes.
By train — underrated
Virpazar sits on the Bar–Podgorica line, which is one of the most scenic short rail journeys in the Balkans. Four to six services a day each way, roughly 25 minutes from Bar and 35 from Podgorica, tickets around €2–3. The station is a ten-minute walk from the jetty.
This is the best option for anyone staying in Bar without a car, and it neatly removes the parking problem.
By bus
Buses on the Bar–Podgorica route stop at Virpazar but not all of them, and timetables shift seasonally. Expect €3–5 and a walk from the main road. Workable, but the train is more reliable.
Organised transfers and day tours
Every coastal town sells Skadar Lake day trips. They are convenient and they are also why the lake is crowded at midday. If you have a car, going independently and taking the 09:00 boat gives you a fundamentally better day for similar money.
Getting to the other entry points
Rijeka Crnojevica is 20 minutes from Cetinje and 35 from Podgorica on a beautiful mountain road. Murici is a full hour from Virpazar on the narrow P2 lakeside road — spectacular, but not a route to rush in the dark. Vranjina, with the visitor centre, is directly off the Podgorica–Bar highway.
