On Skadar Lake, private is not primarily about comfort — the boats are often the same hulls. It buys three things: departure time, route, and the ability to stop. A group boat runs a fixed loop against a clock because eleven other people have restaurant reservations. A private boat turns into the bay you liked because you asked.

The practical consequence is enormous on a lake this size. Skadar covers around 370 km² in summer. A three-hour group route touches perhaps a tenth of it.

The maths on price

Private boats price per boat. A four-hour private wooden boat sits around €120–180. A full-day private sport boat runs €250–450 depending on route length and fuel. Group tours are €20–45 per person.

So: two people pay a genuine premium for privacy. Four people reach parity with a three-hour group tour and get twice the lake. Six people are simply paying less per head than the group boat while going further. If you are a family or two couples travelling together, the decision makes itself.

Who should not book private

Solo travellers on a budget, and anyone who enjoys the social side of a shared boat — the group departures out of Virpazar are genuinely convivial, and the guides are the same local boatmen either way. If your total lake budget is under €60, spend it on a good group departure and a long lunch rather than stretching to a thin private hour.

Booking mechanics

Private boats need 24–48 hours' notice in high season, less in shoulder months. Confirm three things in writing: total duration, whether national park fees are included, and where you park.
