Why this lake beats the coast for it

The Adriatic in August is beautiful and extremely crowded. Skadar Lake, twenty minutes inland, is the largest lake in the Balkans with a fraction of the traffic. Two hours before sunset you can be the only boat visible in any direction — something that is simply not purchasable in Kotor bay.

The shape of the evening

Depart about two hours before sunset. Forty minutes out through the channel and the lily fields, engine off in a sheltered bay for the last of the sun, then a slow return through the afterglow with the Rumija ridge turning purple behind you. Back at the jetty for a 21:00 table in the village.

Private is the whole point here. A scenic wooden boat cruise booked privately runs €120–180 and puts the timing entirely in your hands.

We handle several every season, and the pattern that works is simple: tell the boatman in advance, agree a signal, and let him position the boat and cut the engine. Do not attempt it while the boat is planing. Bring the champagne yourself — most operators are happy to keep it cold and produce it on cue.

• Bring a layer: it cools quickly on the water after sunset from September.
• Reserve dinner before you sail; the good terraces fill.
• Mosquito repellent for the reed sections at dusk.
• Cash for the boat and a tip if the evening was handled well.
