Skadar Lake's Hidden Beaches and Swimming Bays
Warm, clean freshwater and a shoreline most visitors never see — if you know which bays hold their depth in August.

Murici
The one everybody knows, and still worth it. A pebble and shingle beach on the southern shore, backed by chestnut and olive, with the clearest water on the lake and a couple of simple restaurants. Reachable by car on the P2 lakeside road from Virpazar — an hour of spectacular, slow driving — or in about 70 minutes by fast boat.
Pješačac and the southern coves
West of Murici the shoreline breaks into a series of small coves with pine shade and deep water close in. Some have rough tracks down; most do not. This is where a boat changes the day entirely, because you can pick the empty one.
The northern shallows — manage expectations
Around Virpazar and Vranjina the lake is shallow, silty and thick with vegetation. It is wonderful for birds and unpleasant for swimming. If someone tells you Skadar Lake is muddy, they swam here. Twenty kilometres south the same lake has three metres of visibility.
Water temperature and quality
Water quality on the open southern sections is good. Avoid swimming immediately after heavy rain, when runoff clouds the northern arms, and stay clear of dense vegetation mats where visibility is nil.
- May: 18–20 °C — brisk, swimmable for the committed.
- June: 22–24 °C.
- July–August: 25–27 °C, warmer than the Adriatic.
- September: 23–25 °C, the best swimming month of the year.
- October: 19–21 °C and dropping.
Finding an empty bay
The reliable method is a boat with range and a boatman who knows where the depth holds in August. A full-day private all-over-the-lake boat tour typically includes two or three swim stops chosen on the day for wind and water clarity — which is the entire difference between a photograph of a beach and having one to yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Can you swim in Skadar Lake?
Yes, and it is excellent on the southern shore around Murici. The shallow northern end near Virpazar is silty and better for birdwatching than bathing.
What is the best beach on Skadar Lake?
Murici for accessibility, facilities and clear water. The unnamed coves west of it are better if you have a boat.
How warm is Skadar Lake in summer?
Around 25–27 °C in July and August — usually a degree or two warmer than the sea at Bar or Budva.
