Bar connects to Virpazar by both rail and the Sozina tunnel.

Bar is the most practical coastal base for anyone who wants both sea and lake. The Sozina tunnel puts Virpazar half an hour away, the railway runs the same route in twenty-five minutes, and the town itself is a working port rather than a resort strip — cheaper, calmer and considerably less crowded in August.

Things to do

  • Stari Bar — the ruined Ottoman-Venetian hill town, one of Montenegro's best sites.
  • The 2,000-year-old olive tree at Mirovica.
  • Swim at Utjeha or Čanj, south of the port.
  • Take the 09:00 train to Virpazar and be on a boat by 10:00.

Getting to Skadar Lake

  • Car: 27 km via the Sozina tunnel (toll about €3.50), 30 minutes.
  • Train: 25 minutes to Virpazar, €2–3, the most relaxed option available anywhere on the coast.
  • Bus: irregular but cheap; check the timetable the day before.

  • Virpazar and a boat tour — the standard, and easy.
  • Murici via the P2 road — 1 h 15 min, combine with a swim.
  • Ulcinj and Velika Plaža — 40 minutes south.
  • Skadar Lake sunset cruise then dinner back in Bar.
