Four criteria: how much of the lake it reaches, how quiet the boat is, whether the departure time uses the good light, and whether the operator is a local family or a reseller. Price matters, but a cheap boat at midday in August is poor value at any number.

Best for families and first-timers — the traditional wooden boat

Four hours from Poseljani, around €120–180 privately, slow and stable with shade. Children cope with it, grandparents enjoy it, and it is the only boat quiet enough for serious birdwatching. Book the authentic Poseljani tour if atmosphere matters more than distance.

Best value — the 09:00 group departure from Virpazar

Three hours, €30–45 per person, park entry usually included. The early slot means flat water, active birds and a return before the village fills. The identical route at 12:00 is a worse product at the same price.

Best for couples — the sunset cruise

• Is national park entry included?
• Total duration on the water, not including boarding time.
• Swim stops — how many, and where.
• Cash or card, and whether the price is per person or per boat.
