Where to Stay in Virpazar and Around Skadar Lake
There are no resorts here — and that is the point. Guesthouses, apartments and the case for staying overnight at all.

What accommodation exists
Virpazar has guesthouses, small family hotels and private apartments — perhaps a couple of hundred beds in total. There is no resort, no chain hotel and no spa complex, because the national park boundary and the size of the village make it impossible. Expect €40–80 per night for a double in season, €90–140 for a good apartment sleeping four.
Why staying overnight changes the trip
The day-trip rhythm on this lake is brutal: arrive 11:00, queue, boat at 12:00, lunch, leave 16:00. You experience the lake at its hottest, busiest and least attractive.
Stay one night and you get the 07:00 lake — mist on the channel, herons feeding, not a boat in sight — and the 20:00 village, when the coaches have gone and the terraces belong to locals again. A recommended apartment near Skadar Lake puts both within walking distance.
Choosing your base
- Virpazar: best for boats, restaurants and no-car logistics. Slightly noisy in the centre in August.
- Godinje and the Crmnica villages: stone houses and vineyards, 10 minutes away, needs a car.
- Murici: swimming and quiet, an hour of slow road from Virpazar.
- Rijeka Crnojevica: the prettiest village on the lake, limited beds, close to Cetinje.
- Podgorica or Bar: more choice and more nightlife, but you lose the lake at dawn entirely.
Booking practicalities
July and August book out four to eight weeks ahead — there simply are not many beds. Air conditioning is not universal in older stone houses; ask. Many guesthouses include a substantial homemade breakfast, and several will hold parking for guests, which in Virpazar is worth more than a minibar.
Pair it with an early boat
The single best reason to sleep here is being on the water at 08:00. If you have booked a bed, book the first departure too — see our boat tour guide for the morning schedule.
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth staying overnight at Skadar Lake?
Yes, if you can. Early morning and late evening are the two best hours on the lake, and both are impossible on a coastal day trip.
Are there hotels in Virpazar?
Small family hotels, guesthouses and apartments — no resorts or chains. Expect €40–80 for a double in season.
How far in advance should I book?
Four to eight weeks for July and August. A few days is usually enough in May, June, September and October.
