Pavlova Strana — the meander
Sunrise to about 10:00. The classic wide shot needs 24–35 mm; a longer lens compresses the hills nicely. In autumn the mist sits in the valley until mid-morning and the shot transforms.
The lily fields
June, from a boat, low to the water. Ask the boatman to approach with the sun behind you so the pads read green rather than silver. A polariser is essential here — it is the difference between water and glare.
Besac fortress, Virpazar
Golden hour and blue hour. Ten-minute climb from the village, looking down over the delta and the boats. The best free viewpoint on the lake and almost always empty.
Birds
400 mm minimum for pelicans, 300 mm workable for herons and cormorants along the reed line. First two hours after sunrise. Shoot from a slow boat with the engine off — details in our birdwatching guide.
Sunset on open water
Head south-west out of the channel so the light rakes across the reeds. Stay out twenty minutes past the sun; the afterglow over the Rumija ridge is usually the best frame of the evening. A private boat that stops where you ask is worth more than any lens here — see the sunset tour guide for departure times.
Gear notes
- Polariser: non-negotiable.
- 24–70 mm covers 80% of a boat day; add a 100–400 mm for birds.
- Dry bag and a microfibre cloth — spray reaches everything on a fast boat.
- Keep shutter above 1/250 s; the boat is never truly still.
- Drones require national park permission. Ask, do not assume.
