7 Days in Montenegro: A Day-by-Day Itinerary
Seven days, four bases, no wasted afternoons — with the lake given the day it deserves.

Day 1 — Arrive, Kotor bay
Fly into Tivat or Podgorica. Collect the car, drive to Kotor (15 minutes from Tivat, 90 from Podgorica). Walk the old town in the evening when the cruise passengers have gone. Sleep in Kotor or Perast.
Day 2 — Perast and the ladder
Climb the fortress trail above Kotor at 07:00 before the heat. Boat to Our Lady of the Rocks from Perast in the afternoon. Swim at Ljuta. Second night in the bay.
Day 3 — Lovćen and Cetinje
Drive the Kotor serpentine to Lovćen (25 hairpins, extraordinary views), the Njegoš mausoleum, then Cetinje for the old capital and the monastery. Descend to Rijeka Crnojevica for the meander viewpoint in late light. Sleep at Skadar Lake.
Day 4 — Skadar Lake
The day the lake gets properly. Boat at 09:00 from Virpazar — three hours minimum, and if there are four of you the private all-over-the-lake boat tour turns it into the highlight of the week. Lunch in the village, Crmnica wine in the afternoon, Besac fortress at sunset. Second night at the lake.
Day 5 — Lakeside road to the coast
Drive the P2 south shore road to Murici (one hour, slow, spectacular). Swim. Continue to Bar for Stari Bar and the old olive tree. Sleep in Bar or Ulcinj.
Day 6 — North to Durmitor
The long leg: Bar to Žabljak via Podgorica and the Tara canyon, four to five hours with stops at the Đurđevića Tara bridge. Sleep in Žabljak.
Day 7 — Durmitor and out
Black Lake circuit in the morning (3.5 km, easy), then drive back to Podgorica airport (2.5 hours) or the coast (3.5 hours). Leave buffer; the canyon road does not reward optimism.
What to cut if you only have five days
Drop Durmitor, not the lake. The mountains need two full days to be worth the driving; Skadar Lake delivers in one and sits on the route between everything else. Details on approach roads in how to get to Skadar Lake.
Frequently asked questions
Is one week enough for Montenegro?
Yes, for the bay of Kotor, Skadar Lake and one mountain area. Trying to add the far north or Ulcinj as well means driving more than sightseeing.
How many days should I spend at Skadar Lake?
One full day and one night is the sweet spot: a morning boat, the wine villages in the afternoon and sunrise on the water.
What is the best month for this itinerary?
June or September. July and August add heat, coastal traffic and full car parks without adding anything else.
